All good things, even a wonderful forum, come to their natural end. In the case of a forum, it may be because members are moving away or their needs have changed. At a final forum meeting, members can be invited to look backward, reflect, and share their gratitude for each other. Consider doing one or more of these exercises:
- Looking backwards on yourself: (~7 min/person)
Please be prepared to share your “5-4-3-2-1 Lifeline” over the time you’ve been in forum
o 5 Happy events
o 4 Challenges or sad events
o 3 People who influenced you
o 2 Things to change
o 1 Dream
- Looking backward on the forum (~4 min/person)
Please be prepared to share on the following themes. Be as specific as possible; share your stories.
o The three most important things you’ve learned about yourself/that you didn’t know before you were in forum
o Special moments/forum gifts to you: Memorable phrases, questions, interactions, presentation topics, or retreat exercises that have lived on in you. Why are they important? How do past forum lessons continue to apply in your life today?
- Expressing gratitude for other members (~3 min/person)
Allowing each member to be in the “spotlight” for the allocated time, ask others to express appreciation for that member using one or more of these prompts:
o From you I have learned…
o In you I see…
o For you I hope
o Between us I feel…
o From you I have learned…
o I see this superpower in you…
Whichever exercises you use, send the prompts out in advance to allow members to reflect on what they might want to share. The exercises can be adapted based on the number of members, available time, and how many years the forum has been meeting.
