A forum moderator recently approached me about a challenging situation. A longstanding member had been diagnosed with dementia and was having increasing problems attending, participating effectively, and preparing their monthly update. I suggested the moderator consider these ideas and options:
- The forum needs to respect the limitations of the member with dementia, but not necessarily converge to the lowest common denominator. The forum also needs to ensure that any continued participation of the member with dementia does not create a concern that confidentiality could be compromised by that member.
- One possible way to proceed would be to create two forum “tracks.” One track could be the “standard” forum, not including the affected member. This track would recommit to getting the substantive value members want from forum. The other track would be more social, perhaps one or two dinners per year, which the affected member would attend.
- The affected member could be offered a sabbatical from the forum (or from “Track One”) with the possibility that they might rejoin in the future (even if this is unlikely given that dementia typically worsens over time).
- It’s very important to have an empathetic discussion with the member (and perhaps with their spouse) to see what support the member may need and if he/she can effectively participate. By including the member in the conversation, they can also be part of creating away to go forward.
- This is a tight rope to walk, requiring both empathy and practicality. The conversation is best done privately, with either the moderator or with the forum member who has the strongest relationship with the affected member. Goals of the conversation:
o See what the affected member thinks would be best, what they want going forward, and how they see their level of participation.
o Talk about best practices and how the affected member sees themselves continuing to fit into those best practices that make for a great forum, e.g., how they see their ability to continue to adhere to norms around confidentiality, attendance, participation, etc.
